How To Rely On Jesus

Staying connected to the Vine

John 15:5-6, Romans 7:18-19, Colossians 1:9-11, 1 Thessalonians 5:16-18, Luke 22:43

The Vine and the Branches

“I am the vine; you are the branches. The one who remains in me and I in him produces much fruit, because you can do nothing without me. If anyone does not remain in me, he is thrown aside like a branch and he withers.”
— John 15:5-6 (CSB)

Jesus said that unless we stay in Him, we will wither and perish. This is not a suggestion—it is a warning. A branch disconnected from the vine cannot survive. It cannot produce fruit. It can only dry up and be thrown away.

The Problem — Human Strength Is Too Weak

All the disciples fell away when Jesus was taken. They scattered. They denied knowing Him. Even the closest followers failed when tested.

Peter swore he would die with Jesus. But when the moment came, fear overtook him. Three times he denied even knowing the man he had followed for three years.

The Hard Truth

If the apostles—who walked with Jesus, saw His miracles, and heard His teaching—could not stand in their own strength, how can we expect to?

The Struggle Within

The apostle Paul wrote about sin that lives in his flesh. He fought his own flesh to stay true to God.

“For I know that nothing good lives in me, that is, in my flesh. For the desire to do what is good is with me, but there is no ability to do it. For I do not do the good that I want to do, but I practice the evil that I do not want to do.”
— Romans 7:18-19 (CSB)

Our desires constantly battle against following God. Even when we want to do right, something inside us pulls the other way. This is not just a weakness—it is a war.

The Solution — Prayer and Dependence

Paul told people to pray always. In Colossians 1:9-11, he writes of praying continually for believers to be filled with spiritual wisdom. In 1 Thessalonians 5:16-18, he instructs: “Rejoice always, pray constantly, give thanks in everything.”

He said to speak in tongues in the Spirit to stay focused. Prayer is how we stay connected to Jesus—our source of life.

Prayer Is Connection

A branch does not struggle to stay connected to the vine. It simply abides. Prayer is how we abide in Christ—acknowledging our dependence, receiving His life, and staying attached to the source.

Why These Prayers Exist

We know that the human flesh is weak. That's why we need divine help.

Everyone asked for help throughout Scripture:

  • Abraham prayed for a son
  • King David prayed for forgiveness and strength
  • Paul prayed for relief from his “thorn in the flesh”
  • Even Jesus was strengthened by angels in the Garden of Gethsemane
“Then an angel from heaven appeared to him, strengthening him.”
— Luke 22:43 (CSB)

If Jesus Himself received strength through divine help while praying in anguish, how much more do we need it?

The Key Truth

  • We cannot rely on our own strength
  • We must stay connected to Jesus through prayer
  • When we ask, He helps us
  • These prayers are tools to help us remain in Him

Scripture Foundation

John 15:5-6 (CSB)

“I am the vine; you are the branches. The one who remains in me and I in him produces much fruit, because you can do nothing without me. If anyone does not remain in me, he is thrown aside like a branch and he withers. They gather them, throw them into the fire, and they are burned.”

Romans 7:18-19 (CSB)

“For I know that nothing good lives in me, that is, in my flesh. For the desire to do what is good is with me, but there is no ability to do it. For I do not do the good that I want to do, but I practice the evil that I do not want to do.”

Colossians 1:9-11 (CSB)

“For this reason also, since the day we heard this, we haven't stopped praying for you. We are asking that you may be filled with the knowledge of his will in all wisdom and spiritual understanding, so that you may walk worthy of the Lord, fully pleasing to him: bearing fruit in every good work and growing in the knowledge of God, being strengthened with all power, according to his glorious might, for all endurance and patience, with joy.”

1 Thessalonians 5:16-18 (CSB)

“Rejoice always, pray constantly, give thanks in everything; for this is God's will for you in Christ Jesus.”

Luke 22:43 (CSB)

“Then an angel from heaven appeared to him, strengthening him.”

Jesus, in His humanity, received divine strength through an angel while praying in the Garden of Gethsemane before His crucifixion.

“Apart from me you can do nothing.”

— John 15:5 (CSB)
