Is It Possible To Overcome Sexual Temptation?

Biblical wisdom for the battle for purity

2 Samuel 11, 1 Corinthians 7, Matthew 5:28, Proverbs 18:22

David's Warning: The Danger of Leisure

King David struggled with sexual temptation when he took a break from battle. He was on his balcony overlooking a rooftop and saw Bathsheba bathing (2 Samuel 11). What happened next changed the course of his life β€” and the life of his family β€” forever.

The pattern is clear: temptations come when we have too much spare time and are relaxed. When we are busy working on things in life, we don't get distracted by sexual things. Basically, when we have too much leisure time, we will get tempted.

The Heart's Condition

Jesus said in the New Testament that even having sexual thoughts about a woman is adultery in the heart (Matthew 5:28). Jesus is right β€” but this isn't about trying to stay pure. All of us are fallen because we are human and weak.

β€œBut I tell you, everyone who looks at a woman lustfully has already committed adultery with her in his heart.”
β€” Matthew 5:28 (CSB)

This is about pointing out that if we have sexual thoughts, we are already in the wrong mindset. We are already thinking about pleasure and worldly things rather than working and doing things that fulfill our higher purpose.

Paul's Teaching: Marriage as the Solution

Paul wrote that not all men can accept not being married. So he encouraged men and women to get married to avoid sexual temptations (1 Corinthians 7:2-9):

β€œBut because sexual immorality is so common, each man should have sexual relations with his own wife, and each woman should have sexual relations with her own husband... if they do not have self-control, they should marry, because it is better to marry than to burn with desire.”
β€” 1 Corinthians 7:2, 9 (CSB)

The point is that sexual urges are not supposed to be controlled β€” they are supposed to be enjoyed between man and wife. This is in 1 Corinthians 7. Not all men can accept being sexually inactive. Be happy with your own wife.

Key Principles for Overcoming

Stay Busy

Work on things that you love to do that you are skilled in doing.

β€œHere is what I have seen to be good: It is appropriate to eat, drink, and experience good in all the labor one does under the sun during the few days of his life God has given him, because that is his reward.” β€” Ecclesiastes 5:18 (CSB)

Live for Your Higher Purpose

Instead of seeking pleasure, seek to fulfill your calling. Your higher purpose is greater than momentary gratification.

Get Married

A wife is a gift of God according to Proverbs 18:22: β€œA man who finds a wife finds a good thing and obtains favor from the LORD.” If marriage is God's plan for you, embrace it.

β€œA man who finds a wife finds a good thing and obtains favor from the LORD.”
β€” Proverbs 18:22 (CSB)

Pray for Deliverance

Above all, pray to be delivered from temptation. This is what Jesus taught us in the Lord's Prayer.

β€œAnd do not bring us into temptation, but deliver us from the evil one.”
β€” Matthew 6:13 (CSB)

The Ultimate Answer

The battle against sexual temptation is not one we win by willpower alone. We win by:

  • Filling our time with meaningful work
  • Pursuing our God-given purpose
  • Embracing the gift of marriage if that's God's plan for us
  • Prayer β€” constantly asking God to deliver us

Remember: the flesh is weak. But God is strong.

β€œSo I take pleasure in weaknesses, insults, hardships, persecutions, and in difficulties because of Christ. For when I am weak, then I am strong.”
β€” 2 Corinthians 12:10 (CSB)

Scripture Foundation

1 Corinthians 7:2-5 (CSB)

β€œBut because sexual immorality is so common, each man should have sexual relations with his own wife, and each woman should have sexual relations with her own husband. A husband should fulfill his marital duty to his wife, and likewise a wife to her husband...”

Therefore, I will most gladly boast all the more about my weaknesses, so that Christ's power may reside in me. So I take pleasure in weaknesses, insults, hardships, persecutions, and in difficulties because of Christ. For when I am weak, then I am strong.”

β€œNo temptation has come upon you except what is common to humanity. But God is faithful; he will not allow you to be tempted beyond what you are able, but with the temptation he will also provide a way out so that you may be able to bear it.”
