Where Do Evil Spirits Come From?

The Source of All Spirits

1 Samuel 16:14, 1 Kings 22:19-23, Job 1-2, 2 Corinthians 12:7-10

The Answer from Scripture

The question of where evil spirits come from is answered throughout Scripture β€” they ultimately come from God, who controls all spiritual beings.

King Saul: When God Removes His Protection

In 1 Samuel 16:14, we read: β€œNow the Spirit of the LORD had departed from Saul, and a harmful spirit from the LORD tormented him.”

The context is crucial. God's Spirit had come upon Saul when he was anointed as king. But after Saul disobeyed God β€” particularly when he chose to keep the Amalekite livestock instead of destroying everything as God commanded, and when he tried to remain king even after God had anointed David as his replacement β€” God withdrew His Spirit from Saul.

Saul's own subjects recognized what had happened: β€œBehold, an evil spirit has been sent by God to you” (1 Samuel 16:15-16). The reason? King Saul opposed God. He wanted to hold onto power even though God had chosen David as the next king. King Saul defied God, and God allowed an evil spirit to fill that void.

King Ahab: When God Sends Lying Spirits

In 1 Kings 22:19-23, the prophet Micaiah gives us a startling vision:

β€œI saw the LORD sitting on his throne, and all the host of heaven standing around him. The LORD said, 'Who will lead Ahab to his death at Ramoth Gilead?' And the spirits answered one way and another. Finally, a spirit came forward and said, 'I will be a lying spirit in the mouths of all his prophets.' The LORD said, 'Go and do it.' So the LORD has put a lying spirit in the mouths of all these prophets of yours, because the LORD has decided to bring disaster on you.”
β€” 1 Kings 22:19-23 (CSB)

Why did God allow this? Look at Ahab's character. He β€œdid not love truth” (Ezekiel 14:4,8). When confronted with the truth, Ahab preferred lies. Because he chose deception, God gave him over to deception β€” a lying spirit in the mouths of his prophets.

Job: When Satan Gets Permission

In Job 1-2, we see Satan presenting himself before God. In the first council, Satan obtains permission to take Job's wealth, children, and health. In the second council, he gets permission to afflict Job himself physically.

Why did God allow this? To reveal something to Job β€” and to us. Job was a man of great righteousness. But somewhere along the way, Job had become proud. He thought of himself as a β€œprince” (Job 31:37). God allowed Satan to afflict him to strip away that pride and reveal that man's righteousness is meaningless before God's power and perfection.

Paul: When God Allows a Messenger of Satan

In 2 Corinthians 12:7-10, Paul writes: β€œBut lest I should be exalted above measure, by the vision of the Lord, I was with a thorn in the flesh, a messenger of Satan to buffet me.”

This was clearly a demonic affliction β€” β€œa messenger from Satan.” Paul prayed three times for Jesus to remove it. Jesus' answer? β€œMy grace is sufficient for you, for My strength is made perfect in weakness.”

Why did Jesus keep the affliction? Because when Paul was weak, Christ was strong. The thorn kept Paul humble and dependent on God's grace rather than his own abilities.

The Pattern: God Uses Evil Spirits for His Purposes

  1. God is sovereign over all spirits β€” Even evil spirits answer to God
  2. God uses evil spirits to accomplish His purposes β€” To test, to judge, to humble, to reveal
  3. The ultimate source is often human sin β€” Saul's defiance, Ahab's love of lies, Job's hidden pride, Paul's need for humility
  4. God's purposes are always redemptive β€” Even in judgment, God seeks to draw people back to Himself

The answer to β€œwhere do evil spirits come from?” is ultimately: from a God who is sovereign over all creation, who sometimes permits evil for His greater purposes β€” to reveal the heart, to humble the proud, and to draw His people closer to Himself.
